A Summary of Problems
encountered when ordering
Andersen Windows from The Home Depot

This is a document provided in hardcopy form to The Home Depot on February 21, 2010. It summarizes a series of problems with an order placed with The Home Depot for 15 Andersen windows and 2 Andersen doors. The long day-by-day version of this problem can be found here if you really want all the gory details...

Home Depot / Anderson Windows

6-PART WINDOW PROBLEM

Quote on 10/3/09 was for 15 windows and 2 doors at a price of $14,002.86.
After "bid room", amount invoiced on 10/16/09 was $13,049.20 (slightly less than a 7% discount).
We accepted the order for the 15 windows and 2 doors based on the $13,049.20 price.

Window Quote (before "bid room"): $14,002.86
Window Invoice (after "bid room"): $13,049.20

We were unable to decipher the complicated invoice because it lists line items that we are not familiar with. We were told by the salesperson that the $13,049.20 invoice was for the 15 windows and 2 doors that were on the quote.

Two months later...
After we were told that only 1 of the large 6-part windows would be delivered, we studied the invoice, reviewed Anderson information, etc, and determined that:

Price of a 6-part window on quote (before "bid room"): $1,547.34
Price of a 6-part window on invoice (after "bid room"): $2,237.24
One of the 6-part windows was missing from the invoice.

DELIVERY PROBLEMS

Windows were ordered on 10/16/09 with an estimated delivery date of 11/7/2009. One 6-part window was delivered on 12/4/2009, the other 6-part window was delivered on 12/28/2009, and the remaining 13 windows and 2 doors were delivered on 1/4/2010. The 2-month delay caused significant extra construction expense.

One 6-part window was delivered damaged. This was corrected by Anderson field repair.

Other windows were delivered flat or sideways instead of standing up, but no major damage was found.

JAM EXTENSION PROBLEM

When the windows were ordered, we discussed that we may have slightly oversize (thickness) walls. We were told that since the jams were field installed, they could be ordered oversized (7 1/8") and then be cut down. We were told this again last week. However, the exposed edge of the wood has a veneer over the finger-joints, and trimming the wood to fit would remove the veneer and expose the finger-joints which are not suitable for staining. We should have ordered 6 9/16" jam extensions. We would like to exchange the 7 1/8" jam extensions for 6 9/16" jam extensions. Because Home Depot provided us with incorrect information about how the 7 1/8" jam extensions could be cut to fit, we do not think the 15% restocking fee should be applied. Anderson has indicated that they are willing to do this swap, but that Home Depot does not want to cooperate until the issue with the 6-part window is resolved.
